Energy Vampires

Energy.

It’s real.  It determines your mood. It’s the reason people are drawn to you, or just the opposite.

I’ve been enamored by vampires since I was a kid. They are sexy, mysterious, but at their core, they take. They feed.

As do energy vampires. I’m not sure that they even know that they are sucking you dry. Most of the time, they just want to be near you, soak up all that they can.  Don’t hold it against them. It is exhilarating to be around positive energy.  It’s understandable that a person would want to be around someone who is happy, and full of joy. When you are already in a good space, you want to be around a person that is as well, to continue your current spirits. When you are not in a good space, you want to be around someone who is, to hopefully lift your spirits.

Vampires. Taking, but not giving. Most times, we are hardwired to receive. We look at experiences to figure out what we can gain from it. How often do we look to figure out how much we can give? People normally don’t seek to give first, for fear that they will not receive in return. But giving is a selfless act. You are not supposed to expect anything in return when you give. So how is it that energy vampires even exist?

They don’t come in the form of this negative devil looking thing. Remember, the vampires of folklore are intoxicating. They look like people you know. They are family members, friends, coworkers.

They love to be around you. And the frequency at which they require or request contact with you can ultimately become exhausting. Before you know it, you have been drained dry. And you have absolutely nothing to show for it.

Recognizing energy vampires is important. But protecting your energy is just as important.

  • Don’t be afraid to so no. “No” is a complete thought and a full sentence that does not need an explanation
  • Set boundaries
  • Take time away. It’s okay to not answer phone calls, stay off of social media, and not answer messages immediately
  • Rework your friendships. You have to teach people how to treat you
  • Put yourself first.  Every time. It’s not selfish

It’s easy to say that you should watch out for energy vampires, that you should stay on the lookout. But things happen, life is ever moving and sometimes we miss signs. Recognize, and put yourself first. Every time.
