I was talking with a friend about life and finding out what your purpose is. The older we get, the more I’m having that convo with my girlfriends. She mentioned she was not sure what her passion or her purpose was. I was not quite sure what to say or how to respond. I knew from a young age that my purpose was to teach, motivate, empower, and encourage others. I can’t even tell you how I knew that. I just knew that I liked being in service to others.

When I look back on all of the jobs that I’ve ever held, they all were service based. Something where I used a talent and gave to others. Something where I provided a service and in turn felt good as well. No matter what I choose, the activity may look different, but the basis of it is the same. Service, motivation, empowering.

I’ve just recently decided to walk in the fact that I can affect people with words. The same way that a book or a song moves me, I can do the same for others. When I was a teenager, my grandmother told me that I would have to accept and walk in my purpose by my late 30s and that life would come to the point where I had no choice but to do so. I had NO clue what she meant, and she has been gone from this earth for sixteen years. I get it now.

I told my friend that the most that I could tell her is to think of a few things.

• What would you do if you were not getting paid for it?
• What do people always come to you to do most often? Do they ask you to bake, for advice, to make things for them?
• Take classes that put you out of your perceived comfort zone. You may find the one thing that you are good and that you didn’t know you were good at.
• When people think of you, what activity, idea, service comes to mind?
• What motivates you the most?
• If there was no judgement and you had complete freedom, what would your life look like?

Keep in mind, you don’t have to be a creative to have a passion. The lady that is known for being the childcare provider for her community has a passion for kids and is a nurturer. Maybe you are great at organizing.

Some of us don’t find that passion early. We may need to live a little in order to come in to it. Be open. Ask the universe to guide you. Pay attention to the things that make you truly happy and the spaces in which you feel most at peace. Those are speaking to your passions and your purpose.
